Lanzarote

Lanzarote is one of the Canary Islands belonging to Spain in the Atlantic Ocean. Unlike it’s sister islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, Lanzarote has a more laid back atmosphere when it comes to tourism. Although this small volcanic island is only 38 miles long and 13 miles wide, the landscape is fascinating, as much of the island is covered in dry volcanic ash, and has a desert-like climate. The whole nature of the island is the main attraction for visitors, who choose to return here year after year. There are over five hundred different species of plants on the island, and over 35 different types of animal life, including birds and reptiles, it’s no wonder that UNESCO declared the whole island a Biosphere Reserve back in 1993.

The capital of Lanzarote is Arrecife, a small town on the eastern coast. Arrecife does not boast many outstanding tourist sites, neither does it have a dazzling nightlife, but it does have a harbour which is packed with fishing boats, and the most magnificent beach called El Reducto. This beach was granted a blue flag award for cleanliness by the European Union.. A lovely promenade runs along the beach front, around the San Gines lagoon, which has soft golden sand and calm waters. Places of interest in Arrecife one can visit include:

Castillo de San Jose - A 17th Century fortification which now holds a collection of modern art.
Puente de las Bolas - The bridge that leads to the Castillo de San Gabriel.
Charco de San Gines - A man-made lagoon used by local fishermen.

Costa Teguise is located on the coast in the Municipality of Teguise. Costa Teguise is a purpose built tourism centre, about 10 miles away from Arrecife. The whole layout of this tourism area was planned before building commenced, and the beach is even manmade.

Puerto del Carmen is just a 15 minute drive away from Arrecife airport, this popular destination boasts around 3 miles of broad, sandy beaches, plenty of restaurants, bars and shops. This is a popular choice for couples and families alike, as the Beautiful Playa Grande beach is the ideal place to relax during the day. Puerto del Carmen is made up of a ‘new’ and ‘old’ town, and there are several interesting places to visit, including:

Cueva de los Verdes - A wonderful, natural lava-flow formation, which occurred when the volcano, La Corona, erupted
Jameos del Agua - This beautiful volcanic phenomenon was formed when an underground volcanic flow channel collapsed.

Lanzarote does not offer much history, as most archaeology has been buried beneath lava, so historical sightseeing is really minimal. Some sites worth a visit include:

Timanfaya National Park - Noted for it’s never changing volcanic landscape, stuck in time since 1730.

The Whales and Dolphins Museum - Located in Puerto Calero, explores the evolution of whales and dolphins, which live in the surrounding Atlantic waters. A fascinating day out for the whole family.

Arrecife is home to the island’s only airport, situated just to the west of the town.
